The BritNed powercable will be the first electricity link from the Isle of Graint in Kent to the Maasvlakte in the Netherlands. It stretches 260 km under the North-Sea and is made to share renewable energy. But this is just a part of the project supergrid, which is signed by 10 nations bordering the Nort Sea.The grid will transport wind energy from the Uk, solar power from Germany, and hydropower from Scandinavia to, eventually, all countries bordered to the North Sea in 25 years. It will take about 10-15 years before the supergrid is build, so it’s an investment to a new source of energy for the future.

I did not hear about this project before so it made me curious to read this article. I find it a very refreshing idea to use a supergrid to share renewable energy to its full potential and using the North Sea as a power house seems a good plan. Still it seems pretty risky if there will go something wrong, because it won’t be easy to fix a problem with a cable that’s lying at the bottom of the North Sea. And even though we have technologically developed a lot in the past years, we’ll just have to wait and see if it really works.
